Obituary of James Hendrix

James Arthur Loyster Hendrix died unexpectedly of congestive heart failure on June 6, 2021. Jim is survived by his wife, Linda (Flathmann), his daughter and son-in law, Susan and Ernie Magar, his son Jeffrey, his step-daughter, Tara Laurenzi and his grandson, Owen McCarthy. Jim was predeceased by his first wife, Joan (Sharak), his parents, Lester and Roberta (Loyster), his sisters Martha (Williams) and Barbara (Watson) as well as his brother, Lester Jr. Jim was born in Syracuse in May 1943. He was brought up in the small village of Cazenovia where his mother was town historian and his father was Post Master General. Jim, an enthusiastic Boy Scout throughout his childhood, kept the lessons and laws learned in scouting alive in his heart throughout his life. When Jim was seven, he was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes. He accepted the fact that Diabetes was something that he needed to manage responsibly, but Jim never let Diabetes define or limit him in any way. After high school, Jim’s education included a BS from SUNY Oswego and an MA from SUNY Stonybrook. Directly out of Oswego, Jim accepted a faculty position in SUNY Farmingdale’s Advertising Arts Department where he coordinated the Graphic Arts Technology Program. Jim also spent several years at the National Technical Institute of the Deaf chairing the Printing Production Department. Then, after 20+ years in education, Jim decided to switch careers and go into business for himself. He bought Audiphone Company of Rochester and ran it successfully until he retired some 20 years later. Jim loved camping. He was handy with tools and loved to fix and build. He was a people person and kind of a ham. And Jim was a music lover who enjoyed singing bass in the back row of the choir, playing folk music on Pandora, and spending Saturday nights watching reruns of The Lawrence Welk Show. But above all, Jim’s greatest love and passion was his family who will be forever grateful for the time, support, and wisdom he could be counted upon to share with an open-heart and a caring spirit.
