Table for Four by Alfred Roger Clarke posted a condolence
Tuesday, May 1, 2018
Sometimes when I dine alone
I set places for four
Three places beyond my own.
One might say
For whom are the empty seats?
They are for my friends of yesterday
And loves long gone.
They have all stepped
From this world to the place beyond
From which there is not return.
We chat and talk over wine
I form their words
As well as mine.
One day a neighbor stopped by.
I had set the table on the porch.
He asked to whom I spoke and why.
I could have lied
And said rehearsing a play.
But I replied
With the deceased of yesterday.
He hastily tipped his hat
And backed away.
I smiled.
Who is to say
I am wrong
To replay yesterday’s song.
All of them
Are not totally gone
Until I too depart this earth
And no one else recalls
Their speech or mine.
Meanwhile.
How about a game of bridge?
We four.

Gettysburg by Alfred Roger Clarke posted a condolence
Tuesday, May 1, 2018
On a July afternoon
Sounds of battle stilled
Picket's men lay sprawled in death.
Early on
At Lee's command
They swept across the field
Cut down like wheat before Death's scythe.
Southern independence
Was their cry.
Southern independence
That claimed a black man's soul.
For this they came to die.

About to Die by Alfred Roger Clarke posted a condolence
Tuesday, May 1, 2018
When I am about to die,
Take me to my chair
With the sun at my back
And the Willows bending in the wind.
Take me to the willows
And the walls I built.
They will remain
After I have gone.
A touch of immortality.
We will sip a taste of wine
As we have done many times before.
Then hold me close
So that as I fade away
The last words
I shall hear is your whisper
I love you.

Teddy Bear's Lament by Alfred Roger Clarke posted a condolence
Tuesday, May 1, 2018
I wish I were a Teddy Bear
Who wasn’t worth so much.
Who people were allowed to touch
I remember other days
When I was tightly held
And tucked in bed.
I wish I were a Teddy Bear
Who wasn’t worth so much.
Sometimes my little friend
Would pull my arms
And twist my ears
Or sobbing
Would hold me so close
Even my glass eyes began to cry.
I wish I were a Teddy Bear
Who wasn’t worth so much
Now I wear a card
With my pedigree
Imprinted on.
Kept in plastic bound.
Away from fun.
Standing row on row
To be viewed and bought
But never held.
I do not wish to spend my life
In some collector’s
Glass enclosed vault.
But rather to be held and hugged
Kissed and torn apart in play
Used and thrown away.
I wish I were a Teddy Bear
Who wasn’t worth so much.
